Although Rajam was known for his works based on literature, mythology and classical music, one can find several works based on contemporary themes as well.

Even in such themes, he is true to his style. Here is one such from 1955.

S.Rajam’s most known contribution is his efforts in popularizing the 72 melakartha kritis of Kotiswara Iyer. However, he has sung several other kritis of the composer. Here is a rare one rendered in a AIR concert in Raga Khamboji.

Rajam100 – 7 of 365

Not many know that S.Rajam was commissioned to illustrate for Kalki’s Parthiban Kanavu. The advertisement for the series had illustrations from Rajam. However, he fell apart with the author and did not work for the magazine until the demise of Kalki Krishnamurthi.

Here is one of those illustrations that was published as part of the advertisement. If you had been to Mamallapuram caves, you can relate to this work. I particularly like the way he depicted the fight in a silhouette.

துருவ நட்சத்திரம் – கல்கி மதிப்புரை

கர்நாடக சங்கீத உலகின் மிருதங்க மேதை பழனி சுப்பிரமணியப் பிள்ளைஎன்கிற பழனி சுப்புடுவின் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றை ‘துருவ நட்சத்திரம்’ நூலாக எழுதியிருக்கிறார் இசை வரலாற்று ஆய்வாளர் லலிதாராம். இசைக் கலைஞர்கள் வரலாற்றை எழுதுவதில் முன்னோடி உ.வே.சா.அவர் படைத்த ‘மகா வைத்தியநாத சிவன்’, ‘கனம் கிருஷ்ணய்யர்’, ‘கோபாலகிருஷ்ண பாரதியார்’ போன்றவற்றை வாசகர்கள் படித்திருக்கக்கூடும். இசை வரலாற்று எழுத்தாளர்கள் எண்ணிக்கை மிகவும் குறைவுதான். இத்தகைய எழுத்தாளர் வரிசையில் சமீபத்தில் தடம் பதித்துள்ள இளைஞர் லலிதாராம்.

மிருதங்கத்தில் தமது நாதமயமான வாசிப்பு மூலம் லய விவகாரங்களை அறிந்தோர், அறியாதோர் என இருசாரார் மனத்தையும் கொள்ளை கொண்ட மகா கலைஞன் பழனி சுப்புடு. இந்த நாத மயமான லயமயமான குண ரூப (abstract) உலகை எழுத்தில் எழுதிக் காட்டுவது எளிதல்ல. இத்தகைய சவாலை சந்தித்து வெற்றி பெற்றிருக்கிறார் லலிதாராம். இசைக் கலைஞனது வரலாற்றினூடே அவனது பாட்டினை அல்லது வாசிப்பை, தனியாக அவற்றுக்கே உரிய சங்கீத நுட்பங்களுடன் விளக்கி அவற்றை ஆவணப்படுத்துவதை லலிதாராம் மிகச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்துள்ளார். இது தமிழில் இசை வரலாற்று நூல்களுக்கு அவர் சேர்த்துள்ள புதுப் பரிமாணம்.

16 அத்தியாயங்கள், 224 பக்கங்களில் புதுக்கோட்டைப் பள்ளியின் மூலக் கலைஞர்கள் மான்பூண்டியா பிள்ளை, தட்சிணாமூர்த்திப் பிள்ளைஆகியவர்களின் குணச்சித்திரங்களைப் புனைகதை உத்திகளுடன் ஆசிரியர் வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். குறிப்பாக மிருதங்க மேதைமுருகபூபதி பற்றிய தனி அத்தியாயமும், பழனி சுப்புடுவின் நாம் அறியாத முகங்களும் நம்மை வியக்க வைக்கின்றன. போதும்… இனி வளர்த்தப் போவதில்லை. வாங்கிப் படித்துப் பாருங்கள்! சுப்புடுவினது மிருதங்க கும்காரமும் ரீங்காரமும் உங்கள் காதுகளில் நிச்சயம் கேட்கும்!
